New thing #12: Icky medical procedure

I wasn't sure I wanted to publicize this new experience since it's quite personal. So without too many gory details, I had a procedure done which required me to lay on a table and have needles stuck in parts that have never been exposed to needles before.

As I was waiting for my turn, I thought about my mom. She had treatment for similar symptoms back in the mid-70's. But her ordeal included surgery, an extended hospital stay and several days of recovery. Mine involved 20 minutes of computer-guided treatment, some minor discomfort and a couple ice packs. I'm grateful for those who have supported and conducted the research that led to this technology. And I will continue to be vigilant about my health, even if it's icky to do so.

  1. We're coming to the age when we have to be responsible for our healthcare. It seems nowadays that doctor's don't have the time to give advice on non-threatening conditions any more. I remember a time when you consulted with your doctor...now you're lucky if you get to spend 15 minutes with them. Nowadays it's "here's a pill, call me if you have any problems".

I commend you on being responsible and seeking out other ways to heal your body - even if it was icky! I hope its a success!

  2. I have been following your blog and was surprised to see this type of event as one of your 'new things' to celebrate life. Your description makes it sound as if it were necessary, not chosen. But as I think about it more, your ability to look past the pain (and 'ickyness') of this event and to show real appreciation for the technology that allows you to continue to carry on a normal life is quite noble, and uplifting. I think most people would tend to feel 'woe is me', but you have found the silver lining. I hope 2012 serves you well and look forward to reading about what it brings to you - and what you take from it.

    1. Exactly, that's the point - embracing all that life has to offer, good or bad. Thanks for the feedback!
